US hedge fund advisers are primarily regulated under the provisions of the Investment Advisers Act of 1940. Depending on the amount of assets under management of a hedge fund adviser, the adviser may be either subject to state registration, or registration with the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. The requirements for registration and reporting for advisers of hedge funds has changed with the introduction of the Dodd-Frank Act.
